The Ṁ − M relationship in pre - main sequence stars

چکیده

We examine the recent data and analysis of Natta et al. concerning the accretion rate on to young stars as a function of stellar mass, and conclude that the apparently steep dependence of accretion rate on mass is strongly driven by selection/detection thresholds. We argue that a convincing demonstration of a physical relationship between accretion and stellar mass requires further studies which, as is the case for Natta et al., include information on upper limits, and which quantify the possible incompleteness of the sample, at both low and high accretion rates. We point out that the distribution of detections in the (M, Ṁ)-plane is consistent with conventional accretion disc models, and that higher sensitivity observations might be able to test the hypothesis of accelerated disc clearing at late times.

Evolution of Massive Protostars with High Accretion Rates

Formation of massive stars by accretion requires a high accretion rate of Ṁ∗ > 10 −4 M⊙/yr to overcome the radiation pressure barrier of the forming stars. Here, we study evolution of protostars accreting at such high rates, by solving the structure of the central star and the inner accreting envelope simultaneously. The protostellar evolution is followed starting from small initial cores until...

On the Formation of Massive Primordial Stars

We investigate the formation by accretion of massive primordial protostars in the range 10 to 300 M⊙. The high accretion rate used in the models (Ṁ = 4.4 × 10 M⊙ yr ) causes the structure and evolution to differ significantly from those of both present-day protostars and primordial zero-age main sequence stars. After an initial expansion of the radius (for M∗ . 12M⊙), the protostar undergoes an...

Formation of massive stars by growing accretion rate

We perform calculations of pre-main sequence evolution of stars from 1 to 85M⊙ with growing accretion rates Ṁ . The values of Ṁ are taken equal to a constant fraction f̃ of the rates of the mass outflows observed by Churchwell (1998) and Henning (2000). The evolution of the various stellar parameters is given, as well as the evolution of the disc luminosity; electronic tables are provided as a s...

Observations of T Tauri stars and young brown dwarfs suggest that the accretion rates of their disks scale strongly with the central stellar mass, approximately Ṁ ∝ M ∗ . No dependence of accretion rate on stellar mass is predicted by the simplest version of the layered disk model of Gammie (1996), in which non-thermal ionization of upper disk layers allows accretion to occur via the magnetorot...

Heating of a Star by Disk Accretion

We examine various ways in which disk accretion can heat an accreting star. These include 1) radiation emitted from the disk surface which is intercepted by the stellar surface, 2) radiative flux directly across the disk–star interface, and 3) advection of thermal energy from the disk into the star. For each of these, the physics of the boundary layer between the disk and the star is crucial to...
